Instead, you simply purchase the best ships you can afford during each generation of the story, upgrading when possible and trashing your old ships once they've outlasted their utility. It's also quite disappointing to not see any of the ship customization options that were touted during the game's development cycle. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to replay past missions without starting an entirely new campaign. Some of the requirements for obtaining the achievement points are just sadistic, though, and the game's save system makes it difficult to replay missions to earn these achievements if you've already saved your progress. The missions in the game, for the most part, are well-designed and challenging enough to give you a nice sense of fulfillment after success. Without any strategic value to this aspect of the game, it feels like another level of mindless micromanagement that should have been automated, or in some way developed into a meaningful part of the gameplay. There's no strategy to this - you simply click on a few repair icons whenever one of your subsystems is damaged. It's also distressing to see ships and larger objects blown apart into massive ugly chunks.Ĭombat is also marred by the game's repair system, which has you fixing individual damaged portions of your ship during combat. You're able to lock onto individual ship subsystems with a phaser lock, allowing you to aim at engines or weapon arrays, but very rarely can you make use of this feature to full effect without sacrificing more damage to enemy ships than you would have incurred by just blasting away.
The game's targeting system is also difficult to use to its fullest, as it uses a proximity-based system that should, in theory, give you a solid lock on the closest available enemy target, but in practice ends up often targeting enemy ships well outside your range, even when getting peppered by constant phaser fire. Issuing orders to various ships in your fleet can be problematic, particularly when it comes to selecting movement orders. There are also some deep-rooted problems with the combat mechanics.
